Since I have been in school for the past month and a bit, I haven’t had time to really delve back into writing my novel. I have poked at it here and there, but I haven’t really written anything substantial. I’ve spent the past month being rather upset that I have not been working on my novel and that progress on it has been mostly put on hold. I’ve tried to work some sort of element of my novel into the assignments I have been doing for my creative writing class, but some of the assignments really just don’t work for that. Or at least I can’t seem to make them work.
But one thing that I have realized that is really making me feel like this period away from my novel may be not such a horrible thing, is that when I do get to work on it, I have been coming up with some major changes and I have been rethinking a lot of scenes and events. I think that this is because of the distance I have put between myself and my novel. It isn’t on my mind every second of every day like it had been when I was working on it almost every day. I think that the distancing has made it possible for me to come in with a fresh perspective and look at the writing I have already done and be able to say, “This isn’t quite right.”
On the other hand, whenever I do get a chance to work on it, I just want to keep working on it. I don’t want to have to stop and get back to homework or studying. I don’t want to have to write a short story about a woman going through a divorce when I could be writing about my main character, Delainey’s, brush with death. Don’t get me wrong, I really like my story about the trials of the newly single mom of my short story, but it just isn’t what I really want to be writing about.
That being said, I can’t wait until December when I can get back to writing my novel without the worries of homework and studying to distract me.
On a side note, I have slowly been editing some old short stories to put up on my website for free download! As I am in school, I don’t know when they will start becoming available, but I am hoping soon!
What do you think about distancing yourself from your work and coming back with a fresh perspective? Does it work for you, or would you rather just keep at it until it is done? Let me know in the comments 🙂
