NaNoWriMo, School, and My Writing Future

NaNoGraph 2013I realize that it is December 9th and NaNoWriMo has been over for more than a week but… I DID IT! I had a very trying month and ended up falling horribly behind. But on the second to last day, with almost 20,000 words remaining, I decided to go for it. And I managed to write 19,537 words in two days!

Also, during NaNoWriMo, I managed to outline and summarize every chapter of the first book of my series and I filled out a 250 question questionnaire for two of my main characters. I also wrote a few random scenes, and a couple short stories fleshing out the back-story. Great progress!

I was unable to write up a congratulatory-to-self post earlier because I basically put a lot of school work on hold to finish NaNo and I have been playing catch up over the past week. But now I just have one exam left to do and I am FINISHED.

And I really do mean finished. I will not have finished the program I am in, but I have decided to quit school and get writing. I will probably end up going back in the future to finish the degree, but for now, I am going to write and write and write.

Which brings me to my writing plans. Well, I am super happy with the way November went, so I plan on continuing with the outlining and summarizing and back-storying that I started last month. I need to outline and summarize the chapters for books two, three, and four, which will be exceedingly helpful since I don’t actually know the ending yet (I do vaguely, but… well… yeah…).

I plan to continue that until April which is when the first Camp NaNoWriMo of 2014 will take place. I am going to probably give myself a halved goal (25,000 words) and I am going to get started writing/rewriting the first draft of the first book. I am thinking that the first draft should be finished and ready to edit by the end of July (the second Camp NaNoWriMo of 2014).

Then beginnings the editing process.

So that is the outline of my current writing plans. Full time writer for the win! (And housewife :P)

Now to go floss the heck out of my teeth in preparation for my dentist appointment next week…

End of Week One Update

It is the end of week one for NaNoWriMo and I am not worn out yet? Crazy talk!

Not only am I not worn out, but I am ahead. My stats page on NaNo’s site says “At This Rate You Will Finish On: November 18, 2013”. I am that far ahead? Wow.

I am currently at 19,706 words (yes, I realize I could have squeezed in 300 more words to say I was at 20k… I didn’t want to, okay!?) and my average words per day is 2,815. That is quite a bit more than the 1,667 words per day that is needed to finish on time. So, I am pretty confident that I will reach 50k by the end of the month.

But on to more important things. The actual words I have been writing. As I said in my last blog post, I am not working on a new novel. I am being a NaNo Rebel and writing out back story and world building and plotting. And it is going really well.

I have learned a lot about my main character this past week and I have started to actually flesh out the minor characters. I also have realized that I will not be able to finish this story as a trilogy. It has to be four books long. It just does. So therefore, I have created even more work for myself 😛

I think that even once NaNo is complete, I am going to continue to flesh out this “under water” stuff so that the “tip of the ice berg” is even better (Horribly overused metaphor, I know…). I will probably spend both December and January doing this and then start fresh on the first draft in February.

I’m not going to just throw out what I already have for the first draft though. But I am going to start fresh and use what I have as a guideline, and I will reuse some scenes.

Anyway, my wrists hurt from all this typing, so I am going to get off my computer and go read now.

How are the rest of you NaNoer’s (WriMo’s?) doing? Are your word counts coming along nicely? Are you ahead? Are you behind? (If you are behind, there is always the Writing Marathon on Saturday!)

Free-Writing and NaNoWriMo

Hi all. Just a quick update today…

Recently, I started a new file in Scrivener (If you don’t know what Scrivener is, check it out here!) called “Free-Writing.” Every day since, I have written at least 500 words of, well, mostly stream-of-consciousness. It seems to really help me figure out what I should be doing that day and how. Not only with writing, but with my life in general. Plus, it has been getting me to write every day which is really going to help for next month’s challenge.

In November, I am going to participate in NaNoWriMo, but this time I am going to do things a bit different. Because I am already in the middle of the first draft of a novel, I am going to be a NaNo Rebel and write short stories and character sketches and such to help me better understand my story, the world it takes place in, and the characters within it. I got the idea from a blog post I read by Katie Cross.

I have been thinking for a while now that I really need to expand upon what I have written already. Strengthen my characters and expand their world. And NaNoWriMo seems like the perfect way to go about it because it will give me the kick in the pants that I need to really get it going and get it done. 1667 words per day.

I have added a NaNo progress bar to the side bar of this website, so that you can see how I am doing in completing 50,000 words of back story, world building, and character building. Hopefully, this year, I can be a NaNoWriMo Rebel winner!
