Ack! I must write ALL THE WORDS!
As you may already know, I am currently participating in Camp NaNoWriMo. Which is basically the same as NaNoWriMo except I get to choose my own goal (25k words) and I can work on whatever I want (meaning it doesn’t have to be a brand new story which is good since this story already had about 10k words written before April 1st!) So, I am currently writing the rest of the first draft of Obsession. I really hope I can finish by the end of the month, but we shall see!
I first heard about NaNoWriMo on the third or fourth day of November in 2010 and right away started writing a novel. That novel (which only got to be about 25k) will NEVER see the light of day. It was horrible. But it was the furthest I had ever gotten writing a novel, so that was quite an accomplishment even if I didn’t reach 50k.
Since then I have participated every year, but only once have I won and it wasn’t a true win because I was a NaNo Rebel. I wrote back story, short stories, and character sketches for a novel I had started but never finished and managed to reach the goal of 50k words. That was in 2013 while I was also a full-time student. By the end of the month, I was so worn out that I felt like dying yet I then had to start studying for final exams!
I’ve also participated in almost every Camp NaNo since they begun! And I tend to do better with those. This probably has to do with the fact that I can set my own word count goal, but I think it is mostly because of the Cabin system. I have a few people that I am always in a cabin with (if they are participating that month) and we even have a thread on the forums each November for the main event. It is such a great community of people that participate in NaNoWriMo and it truly inspires me to write my butt off.
I don’t think I would have nearly as many incomplete first drafts if it wasn’t for NaNoWriMo! I know that sounds lame… Incomplete drafts… But an incomplete draft is better than no draft at all!
Here is too many more months of literary abandon! And too many more incomplete drafts (and hopefully a few completed ones!)
