Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody and Choir

“Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?”

Day 17 of the A to Z Challenge is about my time in Choir and singing Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody! (Click here for a list of all the topics)

Music Notes

When I was in middle school, I joined the school choir. I was in two plays before I headed off to high school, Rock’n’Roll and Annie. (They did Cinderella when I was in grade six but I wasn’t in choir yet…) My favourite of the two was Rock’n’Roll. We wore poodle skirts and and sang songs like “Rock’n’Roll is Here to Stay”. It was a really fun play and by the time we finished performing it, I had every word of it memorized. Being in choir and off to the side of the stage on risers the whole time, I got to watch the play almost everyday while we rehearsed and while we performed. It was so much fun.

In highschool, I didn’t join choir right away. I don’t really know why. Maybe I thought it was lame now that I was in high school. (If that’s the case, obviously I was the lame one!) I joined choir in grade ten and it became my favourite class. Not right away mind you. When I first joined, I sang quietly and did not have much self-confidence. Another girl in class — quite rudely — asked if I was even singing in front of everyone at one point. That was extremely embarrassing.

Many of my friends were in choir and since we were spread out across the parts (I was an alto), we would sometimes sing the songs outside of class just for fun. Well, and to annoying other students in the hall.

In my last year of high school, our choir class did some amazing songs. First, we did Carol of the Bells, which was so much fun to all sing together. Second, we took on a large task, for final projects night, we decided to do Bohemian Rhapsody. And it was amazing. We spent months practising and learning actions. When the big night came, my best friend Jessica (Whom I mentioned in the Hedley and Road Trips post) got sick. Sadly, instead of being up on stage standing next to me while we sang our biggest, greatest song, she had her head hanging over a bucket in the choir room.

But, honestly, that’s okay because the most fun part wasn’t even performing it in the end. It was the laughter and fun we had while practising the song that stands out in my memory most. (Like the time Jessica fell between the risers and the wall and we were all laughing to hard to help her… Oops!)

Were you ever in your school choir? And if so, what was the best song that you performed?
